Bristol-based public art commissioners Field Art Projects and Situations have been appointed to produce new public artworks for the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare in North Somerset. Launching in September 2010, Wonders of Weston will feature artworks by six internationally acclaimed contemporary artists: Ruth Claxton, Tim Etchells, Lara Favaretto, Tania Kovats in association with Grant Associates, raumlaborberlin and Wrights & Sites.
Responding to the changing fortunes of our coastal towns since the decline and rise again of the British seaside holiday, each of the artists has developed an artwork which will create a new talking point or meeting place for North Somerset’s primary resort.
Alongside the six new artworks, they are inviting nominations for the Seventh Wonder of Weston. Will it be the derelict Birnbeck Pier or the newly rebuilt Grand Pier; the best fish and chips in the South West; a special place from which to contemplate the Bristol Channel, or even a neighbour’s tea cosy collection? To nominate your Seventh ‘Wonder of Weston’ go to www.wondersofweston.org
The programme with be produced by Situations and will launch on the weekend of 25–26 September 2010.
